psi to atm Conversion

PSI to ATM Conversion Calculator

Convert pressure between pounds per square inch (psi) and standard atmospheres (atm) in either direction, with a live result and a validated Excel workbook.

Pressure (psi) 14.7 Pressure (atm) 1.000276

Excel export is ready for the demonstration values.

Pressure values

Enter a decimal value; commas are allowed only as thousands separators.

Edit this field to convert in reverse; the psi field will update automatically.

Conversion basis: 1 psi = 6,894.757293168 Pa and 1 standard atmosphere = 101,325 Pa, so 1 psi ≈ 0.068045964 atm.

14.7 psi converts to 1.000276 atm.

How to use the PSI to ATM conversion calculator

What this calculator does

This calculator converts the same pressure quantity between pounds per square inch (psi) and the standard atmosphere (atm). It is a unit conversion, not a pressure forecast or an engineering safety assessment. The calculation uses a fixed relationship through pascals: one standard atmosphere is 101,325 Pa, while one psi is 6,894.757293168 Pa. For an authoritative cross-check, see the NIST pressure unit conversion table.

When to use it

Use the calculator when a tire, compressor, pressure vessel, laboratory instrument, or technical document reports pressure in psi but your comparison value is in atmospheres. It also works in reverse when a chemistry or physics source gives pressure in atm and a U.S.-customary specification expects psi. Because the tool performs a direct identity conversion, it is useful for checking calculations, normalizing specifications, or preparing data for another model.

How to calculate

  1. The calculator opens with a ready-to-use demonstration: 14.7 psi. Its converted atmosphere value and a validated example XLSX are available immediately.
  2. To convert psi to atm, replace the value in Pressure in pounds per square inch (psi). The atmosphere field, headline result, summary pills, direction, and multiplier update live.
  3. To convert the other way, edit Pressure in standard atmospheres (atm). That field becomes the source and the psi value updates automatically.
  4. Select Download Excel to export the current canonical values and conversion constants as a real .xlsx workbook. Select Reset to clear both demonstration values. After Reset, Excel export is disabled until a valid pressure is entered again.

Input guide

Pressure in pounds per square inch (psi) accepts a required decimal source value when you are converting from psi. The field accepts ordinary decimals and U.S.-style grouped numbers such as 1,250.5; scientific notation and decimal-comma input such as 1,5 are rejected rather than reinterpreted. A realistic example is 14.7 psi. Increasing this value increases the atmosphere result proportionally. Negative numbers are converted algebraically, but a negative result should not be interpreted as a physically valid absolute pressure without appropriate gauge-pressure context.

Pressure in standard atmospheres (atm) follows the same numeric format rules and becomes the required source when you edit it. A common example is 1 atm. Increasing atm increases the corresponding psi value proportionally. Do not confuse the standard atmosphere unit with a site-specific ambient atmospheric reading; the unit is defined by a fixed pressure value.

Output guide

Pressure (psi) and Pressure (atm) in the summary pills show the same canonical pressure in both units. Converted pressure shows the target value for the direction you most recently edited. Conversion direction states whether the active operation is psi → atm or atm → psi. Multiplier applied shows the exact calculator multiplier for that direction: approximately 0.068045964 from psi to atm, or approximately 14.695948776 from atm to psi. These outputs are exact unit identities apart from normal floating-point and display rounding; they are not estimates of changing weather or process conditions.

Worked example

The startup example uses 14.7 psi. The calculator first converts psi to pascals and then divides by the standard atmosphere: 14.7 × 6,894.757293168 ÷ 101,325 = about 1.000275669 atm, displayed as 1.000276 atm. The reverse identity gives the same pressure back in psi. This demonstrates why the familiar sea-level approximation of 14.7 psi is very close to, but not exactly, one standard atmosphere.

NIST's conversion-factor appendix lists psi in pascals and the standard atmosphere in pascals. For broader context on SI pressure units and the pascal, consult the BIPM SI Brochure.

How the PSI-to-ATM formula works

Pressure is force divided by area, but a unit conversion does not require recomputing force or area. Once both units are expressed in the same base unit, the ratio is fixed. Using pascals as the bridge gives psi × 6,894.757293168 Pa/psi ÷ 101,325 Pa/atm. The pascal units cancel, leaving atmospheres. Reversing the ratio converts atm to psi.

At normal values, the conversion is linear: doubling psi doubles atm, and doubling atm doubles psi. Zero converts to zero. Negative values also preserve the algebraic ratio, although the physical meaning depends on whether the original measurement is absolute, gauge, or differential pressure. The calculator deliberately does not change those measurement conventions; it only changes units.

Rounding note: the screen uses compact decimal formatting for readability, while the Excel workbook stores the canonical numeric values used by the calculation. If you are comparing against a specification with its own rounding rule, apply that rule after the unit conversion.
