Binge-Watching Planner
Turn a time budget, platform, and genre into a practical season-by-season watch plan.
Plan your viewing time
Use a direct day count or an inclusive start-to-end date range.
Whole days from 1 to 365. Example: 7.
First calendar day of the plan.
Last calendar day of the plan; included in the day count.
Switching basis converts the current amount instead of relabeling it.
Hours per day, from 0.25 to 24. Use a dot for decimals.
Filters the built-in planning sample. Actual catalog availability can change.
Choose Everything for a mixed recommendation set.

How to use the Binge-Watching Planner
What this calculator does
This planner turns a viewing window into a time budget and then fits season-level suggestions from a small built-in catalog to that budget. It is useful for answering a practical question: “Given the time I actually want to spend watching, what can fit without overbooking the plan?” It estimates available hours, recommended season time, unused time, and a season count. It does not verify live licensing, predict whether you will enjoy a series, or claim that every episode has exactly the same runtime.
When to use it
Use it when you are planning a weekend marathon, dividing a holiday week between several activities, choosing between shorter and longer seasons, or setting a deliberate entertainment budget so a series does not crowd out sleep, exercise, work, or other plans. For general context on balancing sedentary time with movement, the U.S. Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion publishes the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans.
How to calculate
- The calculator opens with a ready-to-use demonstration: 7 days, 3 hours per day, HBO GO, and Science Fiction & Fantasy. The first Excel workbook is available immediately.
- Choose Plan duration. Keep Number of days for a direct count, or switch to Date range. The date range is inclusive, so August 9 through August 15 is seven calendar days.
- Choose Viewing time basis. Entering 3 under Viewing time per day means 3 hours every day on average. Switching to Per week converts the same plan to 21 hours per week.
- Select a Streaming platform and Preferred genre. The suggestion table is filtered to the built-in planning sample. Use Refresh suggestions to rotate the candidate order without changing your time budget.
- Read Available watch time, then compare Planned season time with Unused time. The table lists the specific seasons used to make the plan.
- Select Download Excel to export the current inputs and results as a real .xlsx workbook. Reset clears the demonstration and user-entered data; Excel export is then disabled until a complete valid plan is entered again.

Output guide
Available watch time is the core estimate in hours: plan days multiplied by the average daily viewing time. Planned season time is the sum of estimated durations for the selected season suggestions. Unused time is the remaining budget after those seasons are fitted, so zero means the sample happens to fill the budget exactly, not that you should necessarily watch continuously. Daily equivalent expresses the current plan in hours per day even when the input basis is weekly. The summary pills and Time budget breakdown repeat the same canonical values for quick scanning. Suggested seasons lists Series, Season, Estimated hours, Platform, and Genre; those rows are also the rows exported to Excel.
Worked example
The opening example uses 7 days and 3.00 hours per day, so available time is exactly 7 × 3.00 = 21.00 hours. With HBO GO and Science Fiction & Fantasy selected, the first recommendation cycle fits His Dark Materials Season 1 at an estimated 7.90 hours and Game of Thrones Season 1 at 9.30 hours. Planned season time is therefore 17.20 hours, leaving 3.80 hours unallocated. The result is a scheduling estimate: the spare time can absorb longer episodes, breaks, or a partial next season.
How the planning model works
The calculation has two layers. First, the time budget is purely arithmetic. In day mode, total hours equal days multiplied by hours per day. In week mode, weekly hours are divided by seven to obtain a daily equivalent before multiplying by the plan length. In date mode, the inclusive calendar-day count replaces the direct day entry. Second, the recommendation step filters the internal season sample by platform and genre, rotates the candidate order when you refresh, and greedily adds a season only when its estimated duration fits the remaining time. This keeps the recommendation list reproducible while making the time budget itself independent of entertainment preferences.
Because episode lengths can differ between episodes and editions, the season hours are deliberately treated as estimates. A higher available-hour result does not mean a longer sitting session is advisable. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute recommends protecting sleep routines and avoiding bright artificial light close to bedtime in its guidance on healthy sleep habits. A CDC review also discusses how high screen time can displace physical activity and adequate sleep; see the agency's article on screen time and health behaviors.
Interpret the result as a budget, not a target
A useful viewing plan leaves room for real life. If the table uses nearly every available hour, consider whether meal breaks, commute time, chores, exercise, social plans, and sleep are already accounted for elsewhere. Conversely, a large unused-time figure is not a calculation failure: it simply means that the current platform-and-genre sample cannot fit another whole season into the remaining budget. You can broaden the genre, refresh the ordering, increase the time budget, or accept the unused buffer.
The platform labels are part of the planner's fixed option set rather than a live catalog connection. Streaming rights, brand names, and regional availability can change, so check the service you actually use before relying on a specific title. The Excel workbook preserves the exact planner inputs, the time calculations, and the suggestion rows so you can compare alternative plans without copying values by hand.
