Age conversion table

Unit Meaning Age
Years Elapsed days ÷ 365.2425 36.23
Months Elapsed days ÷ 30.436875 434.77
Weeks Elapsed days ÷ 7 1,890.43
Days Whole elapsed calendar days 13,233

Minutes Elapsed days × 1,440 19,055,520
Seconds Elapsed days × 86,400 1,143,331,200
The exact calendar age uses calendar years, months, and days. Decimal years and months use the Gregorian mean year of 365.2425 days, so they are conversions rather than calendar-anniversary counts.

How to use this Birthday Calculator

What this calculator does

This calculator measures the time between a Date of birth and an On date. It reports an exact calendar age in years, months, and days; converts the same elapsed time into a selected unit; counts whole elapsed days; identifies the weekday of birth; and finds the next birthday date and the number of days remaining. It uses Gregorian calendar rules, including leap years. It is a date-and-time planning utility, not a legal determination of age for a particular jurisdiction, contract, school rule, or benefit program.

When to use it

Use it to check your age on a past or future event date, plan a birthday countdown, verify how many full days have elapsed since a birth date, or compare the same age interval in years, weeks, days, hours, minutes, and seconds. The calendar logic follows ordinary Gregorian leap-year rules; NIST explains why the calendar inserts February 29 and why century years such as 2100 are not leap years in its overview of leap-day and Gregorian calendar rules.

How to calculate

  1. The calculator opens with a complete demonstration: May 17, 1990 through August 9, 2026. The results and example Excel workbook are available immediately.
  2. Replace Date of birth with the birth date you want to analyze. Enter a real calendar date; dates later than the On date are rejected rather than treated as a negative age.
  3. Set On date to the date on which you want the age measured. It can be today, a historical event date, or a future date.
  4. Choose Age unit. This only changes the conversion shown in “Age in selected unit”; it does not alter the exact calendar age or either date.
  5. Read the exact age, total days, next birthday, and weekday results. The conversion table lets you compare all supported units at once.
  6. Select Download Excel to export the current validated inputs and results as a real XLSX workbook. Reset clears the demonstration data and calculated state; while the required dates are empty, Excel export is disabled until you enter a complete valid pair again.

Input guide

Date of birth is required and accepts a valid Gregorian date through the browser's date control, stored as an ISO-style YYYY-MM-DD value. The supported range is 1000-01-01 through 9998-12-31, and a realistic example is 1990-05-17. Moving this date earlier generally increases the age and elapsed-day totals; moving it later decreases them. A common mistake is choosing a date after the On date, which is invalid for this forward age calculation.

On date is required and uses the same date format. The demonstration uses 2026-08-09, and the supported maximum is 9998-12-31. Moving it later increases elapsed time and may move the next-birthday countdown into a new birthday cycle; moving it earlier does the opposite. If On date equals Date of birth, the exact age and elapsed days are zero. For checking duration logic independently, the date duration calculator from timeanddate.com is a useful external reference for calendar intervals.

Age unit is a required selection rather than a numeric input. Years and months are decimal conversions based on the Gregorian mean year of 365.2425 days; weeks, days, hours, minutes, and seconds are direct conversions of whole elapsed days. For example, selecting Days on the demonstration shows 13,233 days. Do not interpret decimal months as the count of calendar-month anniversaries; that is different from the exact “years, months, days” result.

Output guide

Exact age is the calendar difference after whole years and whole months are removed, then the remaining days are counted. Age in selected unit is a conversion of elapsed days and is therefore an estimate for decimal years or months but an exact arithmetic conversion for days and smaller units at midnight-to-midnight resolution. Total days lived is the number of whole calendar days between the two dates. Days until next birthday counts forward from On date to the next occurrence of the birthday; it is zero when On date itself is the birthday. Next birthday is that date. Born on is the weekday associated with Date of birth. The summary pills repeat the same canonical age, day count, and birthday countdown so the important values remain easy to scan.

The Age conversion table contains Unit, Meaning, and Age columns. Unit names the conversion, Meaning states the arithmetic basis, and Age reports the converted value. A high number in seconds or minutes does not indicate a different age – it is simply the same interval expressed in a smaller unit. Zero is valid when both dates match.

Worked example

With Date of birth set to May 17, 1990 and On date set to August 9, 2026, 36 full birthdays have passed. Advancing from May 17, 2026 to July 17 adds 2 calendar months, and from July 17 to August 9 adds 23 days. The exact age is therefore 36 years, 2 months, 23 days. The whole elapsed interval is 13,233 days. At 365.2425 days per mean Gregorian year, that is about 36.23 years. The next May 17 falls on May 17, 2027, which is 281 days after the On date. Those are the same first-open values used in the result panel and workbook checkpoints.

How the date math works

The exact-age calculation is calendar-based rather than a simple division by 365. It first finds the greatest whole number of years that can be added to the birth date without passing the On date, then does the same for months, and finally counts the remaining whole days. That approach respects varying month lengths and leap years. The conversion table answers a different question: “How large is this elapsed interval when expressed in another unit?” For that purpose, the calculator uses 24 hours per day, 60 minutes per hour, 60 seconds per minute, seven days per week, and the Gregorian mean year for decimal years and months.

Dates are entered through native date controls and represented internally as calendar dates, avoiding daylight-saving-time shifts in the day counts by doing day arithmetic in UTC. For the displayed date format, this page follows the familiar month-name presentation while the underlying control value uses the standardized year-month-day ordering described by ISO's overview of ISO 8601 date and time formats.

Leap-day birthdays

Someone born on February 29 still ages normally during common years even though February 29 is absent. For the annual next-birthday countdown, this calculator uses February 28 in non-leap years and February 29 in leap years. This is an explicit planning convention, not a universal legal rule; different jurisdictions or personal traditions may use March 1 instead. The exact elapsed-day and calendar-age calculations themselves still follow the actual Gregorian dates and are unaffected by this display convention.
