mm to Ring Size Converter

mm to Ring Size Converter

Match a standard inside circumference or inside diameter in millimeters to common ring-size systems used in the US, UK, Europe, Japan, and Switzerland.

Ring measurement

Choose either standardized millimeter measurement. The linked field and regional sizes update automatically.

Millimeters around the inside of the ring. Pick the next standard size at or above a measured finger circumference when fit over the knuckle is the limiting factor.

Millimeters across the empty center of a round ring, measured edge to edge through the center.

Choose the sizing system printed on a ring, receipt, or product listing.

Select an exact size from the chosen regional system. Some chart rows do not have an equivalent in every system.

A ring-size chart is a conversion reference, not a guarantee of comfort. Ring width, finger shape, temperature, and the size of the knuckle can change the best practical fit.

How to use this mm to ring size converter

What this calculator does

This calculator maps a standardized ring's inside measurement in millimeters to commonly used regional ring-size labels. It is useful when a product listing gives a diameter or circumference but you need a US, UK, European, Japanese, or Swiss size, or when you already know one regional size and want the corresponding labels in the other systems. The conversion follows a fixed international-style size chart; it does not determine whether a particular ring will feel comfortable on a particular finger. For professional sizing, the ISO 8653 ring-size measurement standard describes standardized ring measurement and designation, while a jeweler can account for real-world fit factors.

When to use it

  • Checking an online ring listing that shows an inside diameter in millimeters but sells by US or UK size.
  • Converting a ring size from one country's labeling system to another before ordering or resizing.
  • Matching a measured finger circumference to the next suitable standardized chart row.
  • Comparing an existing round ring's inside diameter with the size marked by a jeweler or retailer.

How to calculate

  1. The calculator opens with a ready-to-use demonstration: Inside circumference 54.51 mm and Inside diameter 17.35 mm, which correspond to US & Canada size 7. The example XLSX is available immediately.
  2. To work from a physical measurement, replace the demonstration by choosing either Inside circumference or Inside diameter. The paired measurement and regional outputs synchronize to that chart row.
  3. To work from a known labeled size, choose a system under Convert from, then choose its exact Ring size. The millimeter measurements and all available equivalents update to the same standardized row.
  4. Read the primary US & Canada size, the five regional equivalents, and the two standard millimeter measurements. The highlighted row in the Ring size conversion table shows the same data in context.
  5. Select Download Excel to export the current validated inputs, results, and full chart as a real XLSX workbook. Reset clears the demonstration measurements and selected ring size; after Reset, Excel export is disabled until you choose a complete valid size again.

Input guide

Inside circumference is an optional millimeter selection representing the distance around the inside of the ring. Choose one of the listed standard values, such as 54.51 mm. A larger circumference maps to a larger ring size. If you measured a finger at a value between chart rows, choosing the next larger standard row is a conservative way to avoid selecting a ring that cannot pass the knuckle, but a professional fitting remains preferable. Do not treat a loose string measurement as perfectly precise.

Inside diameter is an optional millimeter selection measured straight across the empty center of a round ring. A realistic example is 17.35 mm. Larger diameters map to larger sizes. Measure the inside edges, not the outside of the metal, and make sure the ring is round before relying on a diameter measurement. The Gemological Institute of America's finger and ring sizing guidance explains why gauges and mandrels are more reliable than improvised methods.

Convert from is a required sizing-system selector for the regional conversion path. It accepts US & Canada, UK & Australia, France & Russia, Germany, Japan, or Switzerland. Changing this control does not change the current standardized ring row; it changes which labels are available in the Ring size list. Ring size is required only when you choose to drive the calculator from a regional label rather than a millimeter measurement. Some chart rows legitimately have no label in a given system, so the list contains only defined equivalents.

Output guide

The summary pills labeled Circumference, Diameter, US / Canada, and UK / Australia are compact copies of the current standardized row. The main result US & Canada size is the primary regional label. UK & Australia size, France & Russia size, Germany size, Japan size, and Switzerland size are direct equivalents where the chart defines one; an em dash means no direct equivalent is supplied for that row. Standard inside circumference and Standard inside diameter show the millimeter measurements for the same row. These outputs are chart conversions, not recommendations about tightness or comfort.

The Ring size conversion table columns are Inside Diameter (mm), Inside Circumference (mm), UK & Australia, US & Canada, France & Russia, Germany, Japan, and Switzerland. Every row represents one standardized size mapping. The selected row is highlighted; smaller rows indicate smaller internal dimensions and larger rows indicate larger internal dimensions. The millimeter unit is part of the SI system; NIST's Guide for the Use of the International System of Units provides authoritative background on SI notation and units.

Worked example

With the startup example, the selected circumference is 54.51 mm and the paired diameter is 17.35 mm. The chart row maps those measurements to US & Canada 7, UK & Australia O, France & Russia 55 1/4, Germany 17 1/4, Japan 14, and Switzerland 15 1/4. Geometrically, a round ring's circumference is approximately π times its diameter: 17.35 × π is about 54.51 mm after rounding to two decimals, which is consistent with the chart. The calculator still uses the standardized chart row itself for regional labels rather than inventing fractional sizes between rows.

Measurement and fit notes

A conversion table can only be as accurate as the measurement supplied. Finger size changes with temperature, activity, hydration, and time of day. A wide band can also feel tighter than a narrow band at the same nominal size. If the ring is valuable, difficult to resize, unusually wide, or intended for daily wear, use the converter as a cross-check and confirm the size with a jeweler's finger gauges or ring mandrel.

When measuring an existing ring, measure the inside diameter through the true center. When measuring a finger, the practical ring must pass the knuckle as well as sit comfortably at the base. If a finger measurement falls between available rows, a larger standard row is often the safer starting point, but the correct choice depends on the ring design and the wearer's hand.
