Swim Time Converter

Swim Time Converter

Convert a competitive swimming time between short-course yards (SCY), short-course meters (SCM), and long-course meters (LCM) with stroke- and distance-aware course adjustments.

Style Backstroke Event 100 yd / 100 m From SCY To LCM
Excel export ready for the demonstration values.

Race details

Use a recorded or target race time. The result updates live.

Stroke affects the long-course turn adjustment.
Freestyle also supports 500 yd/400 m, 1000 yd/800 m, and 1650 yd/1500 m.
Enter seconds (55.42), minutes and seconds (1:02.35), or hours when needed (1:02:03.45). Use a decimal point, not a comma.
Choose the pool course where the source time was achieved.
Choose the course you want to estimate for comparison.

Converted result

Course conversions are estimates for comparison, not predictions of an individual swimmer's exact race.

Metric Value Meaning
Source time 55.42 Recorded time in the selected source course.
Converted time 1:02.72 Estimated equivalent in the target course.
Length factor 1.1100× Yards-to-meters event factor used in the conversion.
Turn adjustment +1.20 s Course-length adjustment associated with fewer long-course turns.
Time difference +7.30 s Converted time minus source time.
For the demonstration: 55.42 s × 1.11 + 1.20 s = 62.7162 s, displayed as 1:02.72.

How to use the Swim Time Converter

What this calculator does. This tool estimates an equivalent competitive swim time when you move between Short Course Yards (SCY, a 25-yard pool), Short Course Meters (SCM, a 25-meter pool), and Long Course Meters (LCM, a 50-meter pool). It accounts for both the yard-to-meter event relationship and the effect of having more or fewer turns. The conversion is useful for comparison and planning, but it does not claim to predict exactly what one swimmer will race in another pool. Starts, turns, underwater skill, pacing, fatigue, and meet conditions can make an individual's real result differ from a standardized conversion.

When to use it. Use the converter when a swimmer has a qualifying or personal-best time in one course and wants a comparable benchmark in another; when a coach is setting approximate targets before a change from short-course to long-course season; when reviewing results from clubs that race in different pool systems; or when checking how a 500-yard, 1000-yard, or 1650-yard freestyle performance maps to the corresponding 400-meter, 800-meter, or 1500-meter event.

How to calculate. The calculator opens with a complete demonstration: 100 backstroke, 55.42 seconds, SCY to LCM. Its result is available immediately, and Download Excel is ready without any extra entry. To use your own race:

  1. Choose Style first so the event list and turn allowance match the stroke.
  2. Select Event distance. For freestyle, the distance pairs include 500 yd/400 m, 1000 yd/800 m, and 1650 yd/1500 m.
  3. Replace Your time with the recorded or target performance. Seconds such as 55.42 and clock formats such as 1:02.35 are accepted.
  4. Set From course to the pool type for the source performance and To course to the course you want to compare. Results update live.
  5. Read Converted time first, then review Time difference, Length factor, Turn adjustment, and Source time. Download Excel exports the current validated state. Reset clears the demonstration and calculated content; while the required time is empty, Excel export is disabled until a complete valid state is entered again.

Input guide. Style is required and accepts Freestyle, Backstroke, Breaststroke, Butterfly, or Individual medley (IM). For example, Backstroke uses a 0.60-second-per-50-meter long-course adjustment in the standard factor model; choosing another stroke changes that adjustment. A common mistake is selecting Freestyle for an IM performance simply because freestyle is the final IM leg. Event distance is also required. Enter the event as the paired race distance shown by the control, such as 100 yd/100 m or 500 yd/400 m; do not manually convert the nominal distance yourself. Your time is a required positive duration. Use a decimal point and either plain seconds or colon notation; 55.42 is a valid example. Comma decimals, scientific notation, negative times, zero, and malformed clock values are rejected rather than silently reinterpreted. From course and To course are required course selections. SCY means 25 yards, SCM means 25 meters, and LCM means 50 meters. If both are the same, the time remains unchanged. USA Swimming's current rules and policies are a useful reference for recognized course terminology and competitive stroke rules; see the USA Swimming Rules & Policies.

Output guide. Converted time is the estimated target-course performance, displayed to the nearest hundredth of a second. Time difference equals target time minus source time; a positive value means the standardized target-course time is slower, while a negative value means it is faster. Length factor is the multiplicative event factor used for the yards/meters relationship. It is 1.1100 for most yard-to-meter counterparts, with special factors for the distance freestyle pairs. Turn adjustment is the additive or subtractive seconds component associated with moving between short-course meters and long-course meters; it is zero for SCY↔SCM conversion and for the standardized direct long-distance freestyle mappings where the special factor carries the adjustment. Source time repeats the validated input in a normalized race-time format. The Conversion details table has three columns: Metric names each component, Value shows the current numeric or formatted result, and Meaning explains its role. These are standardized estimates or identities within the selected conversion model, not guarantees of future performance.

Worked example. The opening example uses Backstroke, 100 yd/100 m, 55.42 seconds, From course SCY, and To course LCM. For a 100 backstroke, the standard yard-to-meter factor is 1.11 and the long-course increment is 0.60 seconds for each 50 meters, or 1.20 seconds for 100 meters. The calculation is 55.42 × 1.11 + 1.20 = 62.7162 seconds. Rounded to the displayed hundredth, Converted time is 1:02.72. The displayed Time difference is +7.30 seconds. The Excel workbook uses the same canonical numeric values, not rounded text copied from the page.

Learn more. The conversion logic follows a standardized course-factoring pattern that combines yard/meter event factors with stroke-specific long-course turn increments. How the conversion model works

Most same-distance SCY-to-SCM events use a 1.11 factor. Moving between SCM and LCM then adjusts for the reduced number of turns in a 50-meter pool. The per-50-meter increments in this model are 0.80 seconds for freestyle, 0.60 for backstroke, 1.00 for breaststroke, 0.70 for butterfly, and 0.80 for individual medley. For 400/500 and 800/1000 freestyle conversions, the special factor is 0.8925; for 1500/1650 freestyle it is 1.02. Direct conversions reverse the same equations rather than applying unrelated rounded percentages.

General form: target time = source time × event factor + applicable course increment. Reverse conversions algebraically subtract the increment before dividing by the same factor.

Interpreting converted swim times

A standardized conversion is best treated as a common comparison language. Short-course pools provide more walls, and each turn can change velocity and underwater distance, so the course effect varies by stroke and by an individual swimmer's skills. A strong underwater swimmer may outperform a generic conversion in short course; a swimmer with exceptional surface speed may translate differently in long course. For official qualification, seeding, records, or championship eligibility, use the governing body's stated meet rules rather than assuming every event accepts converted times.

This calculator is an analytical planning utility. It does not replace official meet-entry conversion procedures or governing-body eligibility rules.
